Defined as a method of examining physical and chemical characteristics of cells or other biological particles, flow cytometry combines optical and fluorescence detection techniques with specialized fluidics, electronics and computer technology. Biological particles including cell subsets, DNA, cells, bacteria and surface antigens are identified by fluorescent labeling of extra or intracellular markers using marker-specific antibodies. Flow cytometry is used in clinical as well as research settings, for the analysis of both fixed and live samples of cells. In clinical settings, flow cytometry is used for prognosis and diagnosis of diseases such as HIV and cancer, assessing organ transplants as well as optimization of therapy. In research settings, the technique is used in a number of applications including RNA/DNA analysis, cell viability assays, drug resistance profiling in malignancies, signal transduction assays, immunophenotyping and cell viability assays among others. The technology is also used in several other research applications such as drug discovery, stem cell sorting, marine biology and environmental sciences, and microbiology.

Presently, the global demand for small-sized, robust and high throughput flow cytometers designed for use in a number of clinical and research applications is dominant. Growth drivers expected to propel the flow cytometry market include imminent prospects in immunology, biochemistry, microbiology, cytogenetics, chemical engineering, agronomy, molecular biology, and cytology applications. Also, innovations in the areas of stem cell research, monoclonal antibodies, marine biology, computer science, electronics and fluorochrome chemistry are likely to encourage market growth.

Long-term growth in the market would stem from development of next generation, point-of-care, compact systems. In terms of sophistication, newer integrated systems are increasingly incorporating innovative features, functions, and applications. Newer instruments from leading players designed to meet the high productivity requirements of researchers feature sorting rates of up to 70,000 events/second. Several modern cytometers are equipped with varying fluorescence detectors and lasers, which enable labeling of multiple antibodies. A few recently launched instruments are also capable of taking digital images of individual cells. Despite the rapid growth forecast, lack of awareness is the main drawback for flow cytometers. Though a number of technologically advanced flow cytometers are available in the market, several end-users are still not aware of the upgraded versions.

As stated by the new market research report on Flow Cytometry, the US represents the largest regional market for Flow Cytometers accounting for a majority share in the revenues generated in the global market. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest growing regional market with annual revenue from the region exhibiting a CAGR of about 11.6% over the analysis period. Despite being a relatively small market, demand for advanced medical and analytical equipment is witnessing steady growth in countries such as India, driven by advances in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals sectors. The trend is exemplified by rise in imports of specific R&D equipment such as biotech and pharmaceutical R&D equipment, pharmaceuticals reference studies as well as certain life saving drugs and medical products.
