This market update analyses the market for over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceuticals, which refers to medicines/products that are obtained without a prescription from a registered healthcare professional. They are non-prescription drugs sold to consumers by convenience and grocery stores. These drugs include pain relievers, cough and cold remedies, sleeping aids, anti-fungals, and other products approved for use as self-medication.

Previously, OTC pharmaceuticals could only be obtained from registered pharmacies; however, recent changes to regulations have meant that certain types of OTC pharmaceuticals are now available from a range of other retail outlets, such as supermarkets and health and beauty stores. This change has divided the OTC pharmaceutical market into two categories: pharmacy-only (P) pharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals that are on the general sales list (GSL).

P medicines can only be sold from licensed pharmacies under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
