Value sales of OTC Healthcare dampened by price competition
The economy of Hong Kong has recovered from the outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which hit in 2003 and has also taken advantage of the continuous expansion of China’s economy. A lower unemployment rate and higher personal salaries were recorded in 2005. Consumer expenditure and confidence also reached its highest point since 1995, driving sales in all markets including that for OTC Healthcare. However, although consumers had strong purchasing power and spent more on OTC Healthcare, price competition was keen among the distribution channels in OTC Healthcare, thus putting pressure on value sales in all sectors of OTC Healthcare. Hence, OTC Healthcare posted low value growth, of just 2%, in 2005.
