China’s power industry has made great progress since the reform and opening up program. By the end of 2003, total installed capacity in China has reached 391.4078 million KW, and the total power generation has been accumulated to 1,905.208 billion KWH. China’s power generation and installed capacity both rank second place in the world. At the same time, the technologic equipment has been improved stably as well as the technical economic indexes.
On Dec 29, 2002, 5 power groups, 2 electric network companies and 4 supporting companies, separated and restructured from Power Corporation of China,established in Beijing. This declared the arrival of new era for Chinas power industry. Competition mode of China’s power industry changed with the power system reform. The former vertical monopolization system has been broken and the market competition has deepened gradually.
In the recent years, China’s economy has experienced sustained and stable development, especially the industrial economy, which makes China the largest production base in the world. As a result, China’s power consumption has been drawn up. China’s lack of power emerges in 2003 which has drawn wide attention. Experts from Power Distribution Center of National Grid Company summarized the four characteristics of the power generation.
In the next 20 years, China’s demand on power will increase sharply with the economic development and social progress. Since the establishment of New China, China’s annual newly increased installed capacity has grown at a rate of double for every ten years. In the coming 20 years, 30 million KW installed capacity has to be increased every year. The average installed capacity per capita is forecasted to be 0.6 KW by 2020, which reaches the average level in the world. The total installed capacity will reach 950 million KW and the power generation will be around 4,200 billion KWH.
