Professor De Witte delivered the second Walter van Gerven Lecture. Bruno De Witte is professor of European Union Law at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, where he holds the joint chair in European Law of the Law Department and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. Bruno De Witte obtained his law degree at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1978. He was awarded his PhD in Law of the EUI in 1985, and was Associate Professor in the Department of Law at the EUI until 1985 when he was appointed Professor of Law at Maastricht University. He took up his current position in March 2000. His main research interests are institutional law of the European Union, including among others relations between EU law and national law, and between public international law and EU law, protection of fundamental rights and the protection of minorities.
