This Market Report examines the market for glassware for domestic use in the UK, such as wine glasses, tumblers, glass ovenware, ornaments, vases, paperweights and candlesticks, etc.

Retail sales of glassware products in the UK decreased by 1.6% and 0.7%, respectively, in 2011 and 2012, impacted by the recession and falls in consumer spending. However, the sector recovered quickly as the UK economy improved and sales of domestic glassware products grew by an estimated 2.5% in 2013 and 3.1% in 2014.

The soda lime glass sector is the largest in the market, estimated to account for slightly more than half of the total in 2014. Soda lime glass is relatively inexpensive to produce and can be made into clear or coloured glass depending on which metal oxides are added in the production process. Lead glass is the second-largest sector, making up just under a third of the market, followed by heat-resistant glass, which accounted for the remainder of the total. Lead glass is mainly used to make a wide variety of decorative glass objects, while heat-resistant glass is primarily used for oven and tableware.

The number of households in the UK has increased steadily over the past 15 years. According to Government figures, there were 26.7 million households in the UK in 2014, up from 24.4 million in 2000. The number of residential property transactions in the UK has also risen over the past 3 years, after the number plummeted during the recession. Growth in the total number of UK households and property transactions are favourable for the glassware industry, as people are more likely to purchase new glassware and tableware when they move into a new house and most households require at least a minimal level of glassware in their homes.

In recent years, there has also been a surge in demand for British-made products from both domestic and foreign markets, especially for premium quality brands. This is due to the fact that UK-made products are often perceived to be of a superior quality.

As the UK economy continues to improve, consumers will be more willing to spend on more expensive, premium quality glassware. Key Note anticipates that the UK glassware market will grow moderately over the next few years, rising by 7.1% between 2015 and 2019.
