Facts and Figures

"The major growth sectors in the food and drinks market during 2000 included chilled prepared foods (up 8%), cereal products, meal accompaniments and meat and meat products (all up 5%). Growth in chilled prepared foods reflects continued consumer demand for quality convenience foods, while the meal accompaniments sector also benefited from the convenience trend, with ready-prepared cooking sauces continuing to show strong growth. The meat and meat products sector is recovering consumer confidence following the BSE crisis, and fresh red meat performed particularly well during 2000."

"There was a total of 3,097 branded products launched in the food and drinks market in 2000. The total number of launches was 8% higher than in 1999 and even exceeded the high level of 1998. This is largely a result of a spate of product activity in the organic foods market, with organic lines appearing in almost all of the categories under discussion."

"The worst performing sectors in 2000 were hot beverages (down 6%), sweeteners and preserves (down 4%), fish and fish products (down 3%), and fresh fruit and vegetables (down 1%). The hot beverages sector is facing increased competition from adult-oriented soft drinks, while fish and fresh produce are established commodity sectors offering few opportunities for major market growth. The sweeteners and preserves market is suffering under continuing consumer demand for healthier foods, and the only category within this market that is performing well is that of artificial sweeteners as consumers look to reduce sugar consumption."

"There were 91 acquisitions recorded in the UK food and drinks industry during 2000, down from 113 in 1999, 127 in 1998 and 131 in 1997. This steady decline in activity reflects the consolidated nature of many sectors of the food and drinks industry, with many markets being dominated by only a few major concerns."
