The UK timber and joinery market is analysed by two sectors: finished wood products and timber processing and semi-finished goods. In 2002, the total UK timber and joinery market was worth an estimated £12.52bn at manufacturers' selling prices (msp). The 2002 market value for finished wood products was estimated to be £9.59bn at msp, an increase of 0.8% on 2001, while the timber processing and semi-finished goods market rose by 1.1% to be worth an estimated £2.93bn at msp in 2001.

The finished wood products sector includes wooden furniture, builders' carpentry and joinery, wooden containers and other wooden products, such as ornaments, picture frames and marquetry. Activities included in the timber processing and semi-finished goods sector are sawmilling and planing of wood and semi-finished products, such as veneer sheets, plywood, laminboard, particleboard and oriented strand board. Between 1998 and 2002, the subsectors with the strongest growth were builders' carpentry and joinery wooden furniture other wooden products and sawmilling and planing.

Factors affecting the UK timber and joinery market include sourcing of timber from sustainable forests, price competition from overseas, new regulations affecting construction/timber treatment and the increasing involvement of overseas companies in the UK market.

Important developments are taking place in the builders' carpentry and joinery sector, following a rise in demand for timber frame houses and factory-made units, such as pre-glazed windows and roof trusses. In addition, the sawmilling and planing of wood sector has seen an investment in importing and distribution facilities. However, there has been a decline in the wooden containers market, as a result of competition from alternative types of packaging.

Developments in the timber and joinery market will be heavily influenced by environmental considerations - the sustainability of timber supply, in particular. In addition, as the recycling of used timber grows, the need for new timber is reduced.
