Cancer Therapies - Is the United States Always the Most Expensive Market?

Decision Resources, Inc, September 2006, Pages: 57

Introduction
The cost of innovative cancer drugs is an increasingly controversial issue. Strict price controls in many countries limit the prices that manufacturers can charge for medicines, whereas the United States’ lenient drug pricing system allows manufacturers much greater latitude to determine launch prices. However, pharmaceutical companies in all countries will need to adapt to a changing pricing environment for oncology drugs.

Get the Answers You Need to Shape Your Strategy
Concern is growing over the rising costs of cancer therapies, particularly in the United States, which has the highest drug prices overall. Have drug manufactures responded to this growing concern? Is government intervention necessary to regulate prices?

Historically, the European hospital sector allowed free pricing of drugs, even in the most heavily regulated markets. But there is a growing trend to control hospital spending on medicines. What pricing controls are being proposed and how will they affect drug pricing in European markets?
Drugs typically do not reach the Japanese market until several years after their launch in the other major pharmaceutical markets. However, Japan recently initiated measures to accelerate the launch of innovative cancer therapies. How will these measures affect future drug pricing and pricing controls in Japan?
