China is one of the world’s most formidable industrial competitors. But just how well are China manufacturers performing on key operational and financial metrics – and what strategies are they using to get there? How do their performances compare to their competitors in the U.S. and elsewhere?

MPI’s China Benchmarking Toolkit features metrics from the first-ever large scale survey of manufacturers. All you need is a web browser to immediately compare your facility data against that of more than 400 China-based manufactures, including:

Compare Your Plant: Answer as much or as little of the survey as you like, then see how your data compares to survey participants over the last three years.

Power User Search: Narrow your results by industry or by a specific metric. For example, view results for Computer and Electrical Product Manufacturing companies with less than $100 million in annual revenue who follow a Lean Manufacturing Methodology.

Create and download reports and graphs: perfect for annual reports and market research presentations.

The Toolkit includes all-new research and data on best practices used by leading manufacturers around China, including:

- Operational measures including inventory turns, OEE, and many others.
- Financial metrics including ROIC and costs of goods sold (COGS).
- Performance improvement methodologies and their pace of deployment.
- Human-resource management and training practices, employee wages, and hiring plans.
- Supply-chain management strategies, tactics and performances.

Methodology
The MPI/IndustryWeek China Manufacturing Study 2004 was designed to collect operational and business metrics and practices at manufacturing facilities within China. In spring 2004 and at the direction of MPI, BNC Resources Co. Ltd. contacted approximately 1,000 plants throughout China and across all major industries, requesting their participation in the study, which consisted of a four-page questionnaire with more than 100 questions. BNC Resources is based in Beijing and conducts industrial research, including supplier audits. From April 15 to June 30, 2004, 406 facilities — all of which were ISO 9001 certified or in the process of certification or recertification to ISO 9001:2000 — answered the questionnaire by fax or via an in-person interview on the condition that their identities would be kept confidential; there was no incentive offered to plants that participated. Data was transferred from BNCR to MPI, and then entered into a database, edited, and cleansed to ensure answers were plausible.
