World Unmanned Air Vehicles Market

Description: War against Terror Propels UAVs to the Fore

Americas war against terrorism is driving the growth of the rapidly changing market for unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) globally. Constantly expanding capabilities have rendered UAVs almost indispensable to military operators. The United States (U.S.) strong focus on UAVs is leading to the introduction of several new models. Commercial applications for UAVs, such as research, scientific, environmental, and agricultural are also being investigated, although lack of proper regulations may stand in the way of their rapid emergence.

This Frost & Sullivan research is a detailed analysis of the global market for UAVs, which it divides into the following segments: reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition (RSTA), combat, and commercial UAVs. It discusses drivers, restraints, as well as challenges governing the market, and offers strategic recommendations to overcome them.

Increasing Government Budgets Drive Market

The campaign against terrorism has spawned new opportunities for RSTA UAVs. Past successes have made a convincing case for the U.S. Department of Defence (DoD) to allocate larger budgets to this segment and paved the way for greater market opportunities. With multiple sensors and a hovering vantage point, UAVs are capable of surveying areas for extended periods of time under adverse conditions if required.

The defense industrial base and future administrations must adapt UAVs to maximize the exploitation of legacy and new sensors so that future conflicts can be taken to the enemy in ways never before contemplated, states the analyst. Building technology that optimizes the use of sensors backed by sustained funding from the Government will further empower the defense industry.

New UCAVs Have Potential to Revolutionize Conventional Military Operations in the Long Term

Emerging design concepts and payload technologies promise a bright future for unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs), despite facing numerous technological, political, military, and budgetary constraints. UCAVs have the potential to find applications in areas currently open only to manned aircraft. Says the analyst, UCAV will become the weapon of choice for the suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) mission, mobile launcher seek and destroy operations, and possibly fixed missile sites and command and control infrastructure attacks.

The analyst adds, In order to become an effective weapon platform, the UCAV will have to perform better than manned aircraft in terms of operational readiness, integration into the overall battle plan, mission success rates, and lower operational costs.
