An Assessment on the Future of Carbon Nanotubes - Strategic Analysis of the Market & Potential
Frost & Sullivan, June 2004
A major challenge facing the carbon nanotubes (CNT) industry has been its inability to economically mass-produce CNT. Prohibitive costs, limited capital, and uncertainty of return on investment in the absence of incremental demand are some of the critical issues that are dissuading manufacturers from expanding their manufacturing capacity. Since single-walled CNT (SWCNT) production costs are greater, this challenge has a magnified impact on SWCNT production as opposed to multi-walled CNT. However, with the range of application markets targeted by CNT expanding continually and therefore the demand increasing progressively, CNT producers and suppliers have started realizing the benefits of volume manufacturing and are working toward making it commercially feasible. Additionally, CNT companies are taking active steps to monitor and control quality and ensure reproducibility as high quality is a very critical parameter desired by the application markets.
