Strategic Analysis of the European Markets for Wireless Applications in Healthcare
Frost & Sullivan, July 2004
Varying Information and Communications Technology Adoption Rates Hamper Uniform Wireless Uptake
There is an urgent need for high-quality healthcare delivery while ensuring the adoption of cost control measures, and information technology systems have been accepted as the enabler to this objective. However, the European healthcare industry is marked by varying levels of systems sophistication and adoption. Since wireless applications cannot function alone - they require secure, scalable networks with reliable access to data - the growth of this industry segment is likely to depend on the uptake of state-of-the-art hospital information systems (HIS) modules. Better HIS modules enable quicker returns on wireless investment and hence, boost adoption rates.
This study explores the European market for wireless applications in healthcare, focussing on the various segments that are projected to evolve in the near future. The research also covers strategies to capitalise on the business potential that the healthcare wireless applications industry offers in Europe.
Integrated Health Records Drive Wireless Adoption for Clinical Decision Support
The initiatives taken by the governments in the United Kingdom and Germany and the e-Health Plan put forth by the European Commission are expected to be the principal drivers for the growth of healthcare IT industry in Europe. The focus is now on improving treatment protocols and bringing about efficiencies in clinical pathways and this is only possible by interfacing all existing clinical information systems, says the analyst of the research.
Clinical information systems, which drive the healthcare IT industry, will also be the prime reason for wireless adoption. Besides the need for integrated health records and clinical decision support enhancement, wireless technology also enables IT connectivity where fixed lines are not possible, streamlines processes, boosts productivity and improves internal user satisfaction.
Wireless Applications Market Set to Show High Growth Rate
The total European wireless applications market was worth $98.2 million in 2003 and the sector is expected to show a phenomenal compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.3 per cent between 2004 and 2008, raising revenues to $445.8 million in 2008. European technology vendors in a strong position to consolidate market share and global participants - mainly from North America - are likely to partner with local companies in the process of building their market shares.
