U.S. Markets for Uncommon Orthopedic Joint Replacements
Frost & Sullivan, Oct 2005
Extremity joints, such as hand and feet, are more vulnerable to osteoarthritis than hip and knee joints In 2000, there were 49 million patients with hand osteoarthritis and 34 million patients with osteoarthritis of the foot in the United States. During the same period the population of the patients afflicted with osteoarthritis of the knee and hip were 15 million and 1 million, respectively. Such a large patient population afflicted with osteoarthritis of the other joints may need joint replacement procedures using artificial implants. In the U.S. for every set of 13 replacement surgeries of the hip and knee, only one replacement procedure for other orthopedic joints is performed In 2004, there were 633,888 procedures for hip and knee replacement performed against 49,506 procedures for shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand/finger/toe and ankle joint replacements combined. But the uncommon joint replacement procedures are growing at 10.5% compared to 2% for hip and knee replacements. The revenues for the uncommon joint replacement market is growing at 15% compared to 9% for the hip and knee replacement market In 2004, the U.S. market for joint replacement implants for hips and knees was worth $ 5. 3 billion while that for other orthopedic joint replacement implants was worth $ 174 million.
Additional Information • Detailed Analysis of a niche segment of the Orthopedic Medical Device MarketThe market for replacement of orthopedic joint apart from those of the hip and knee is less known. This study analyses this niche market in great detail. • Data from U.S. surveys add greater depth to the analysisData derived for Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) sponsored by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality based in Rockville, Maryland, U.S.A. was used for forecasting procedure numbers, and also for mapping the regional and age variation in the procedure numbers. • Competitive LandscapeThe study also includes the markets shares of the various competitors in each sub-segment of this market • Market ComparisonCompares the size of the hip and knee replacement market with that of the uncommon joint replacement market
Technologies
Osteoarthritis: Inflammation of the orthopedic joint due to mechanical wear and tear. Total Joint Replacement: Replacement of both mating anatomical structures of the joint by artificial components. Partial Joint Replacement: Replacement of only one mating feature of the joint using artificial components Primary Joint Replacement: Replacement surgery on the virgin joint using artificial components Revision Joint Replacement: Any subsequent joint replacement surgery on the same joint after primary replacement Cemented implants: Those implants that require “bone cement” for fixation within the bone Cementless implants: Those implants that do not require “bone cement” for fixation within the bone Arthroplasty: Joint re-construction.
