Market Overview

Large Untapped Potential Drives Future Growth of Chinese Diabetes Diagnostics Markets
Increasing incidences of diabetes in China leading to higher volumes of diagnostic tests is the primary driver for the growth of the Chinese diabetes diagnostics markets. These markets grew by 6.8 per cent from 2004 to 2005 and are expected to see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.8 percent from 2005-2012. Considering that only about 15.0 per cent of the Chinese diabetic population of 30.0 million is diagnosed with this disease and also that an alarmingly high 85.0 percent remains undiagnosed, these markets present massive untapped opportunities, remarks the analyst of this research service.
Laboratory diagnostics have long prevailed as the ‘golden standard’ for diabetes diagnosis, contributing to nearly 85.0 per cent of the total diabetes diagnostics market revenues in 2005. The majority of hospital laboratories in China - about 60.0 per cent - continue to favor these methods due to their proven ability and effectiveness. However, emerging point-of-care testing (POCT) diagnostics are generating substantial interest, largely due to their shorter turnaround time and could well challenge the position of laboratory testing as the preferred method of diabetes diagnostics.

POCT Diagnostics Set for Strong Growth
Although POCT diagnostics currently account for a very small share of the total diabetes diagnostics tests performed, they are expected to be used in much higher proportions by 2012 and could eat into the shares of laboratory testing. This emerging segment contributed to 15.0 per cent of the total diabetes diagnostics market revenues in 2005. This relatively low figure can perhaps be attributed to the fact that POCT has predominantly been used in the inpatient departments of hospitals, since the bulk of POCT meters are placed at hospitals’ critical wards. In fact, the POCT segment derived 95.0 per cent of its total revenues through instruments placed in such locations.
However, these meters are expected to increasingly find their way into physicians’ clinics and laboratories as POCT instruments meet with greater acceptance in terms of their quality and accuracy, says the analyst. The diagnosis of diabetes in patients admitted for a different disease, unrelated to diabetes, has also bolstered the growth of revenues in this segment.
