Effects of PACS on the Radiology Information Systems Market for U.S. Hospitals

Description:

Advanced Technology Revitalizes Radiology Information System Markets

Strong demand for picture archiving and communication system (PACS)
technology will drive the sale of high-end radiology information system (RIS)
products. Text-based RIS products such as film tracking databases, patient
scheduling modules, and patient admissions and discharge databases, will be

increasingly co-marketed with solutions that add picture archiving and
communications capabilities. These marketing efforts are already succeeding

in advancing the penetration potential for the next generation of
RIS/PACS products.

This Frost & Sullivan research analyzes the impact of PACS on RIS markets. It
provides key engineering measurements for replacement, standalone, and

enterprise RIS products plus combined RIS and PACS products that are sold
conjunctively. By evaluating drivers and restraints and identifying potential
challenges, this study offers its users a privileged view of the field.

Enterprise Solutions Move Toward Application Service Provider Model

The application service provider (ASP) model has risen beyond expectations

in the past year and is poised to become the preferred deployment mode for
enterprise sales, says the study’s author. The majority of top-tier PACS
providers have already created some type of ASP product, and we expect ASP
to become a rising standard over the long term.

Still, over-investment in ASP product development could restrain short-term
profits for industry participants. Currently, the installed base of ASP solutions
is still less than 8 percent of the total market. Providers may be taking a large

gamble by allocating large investments to ASP product rollouts before market
demand has blossomed, says the author.

Middle-Tier Hospitals Offer Important Market Opportunities

The highest adoption of expensive PACS workstations is concentrated in
large, urban, private hospitals, says the study’s author. Yet mid-tier hospitals,
by volume, are the largest overall revenue generators. Although mid-tier
institutions do not tend to buy enterprise solutions, their demands for
standalone RIS products are an important source of sales.

Many mid-tier hospitals have outdated standalone systems that require
replacement, but price could restrain purchases. Offering credit options or
flexible payment plans might cement more standalone contracts, says the
author. With its expert strategic recommendations, this research will enable
your company to develop an effective business plan.
