This report draws upon two recent pieces of consumer research undertaken by the author, exploring the use of in-store catering facilities within garden centres. The research data comes from two sources: a nationally representative quantitative survey of 2019 adults (15+ year olds living in GB1), which was undertaken in May/June 2006 and a qualitative research project undertaken amongst 300 garden centre visitors to 12 garden centres across Great Britain during September 2006.

The report is aimed at garden centre retailers who are currently, or considering, operating an in-store café or restaurant. The report provides a profile of users of in-store cafés or restaurants (in-store catering) and the factors that influence their use. It explores the planned and spontaneous use of in-store catering and its impact on expenditure on other retail products in the store. In order to put the data into context, we also present some national trends on out-ofhome eating.

The report is intended to complement the guidance note Successful Garden Centre Coffee Shops, which provides strategic, legislative and practical information for garden centres considering setting up an in-store catering enterprise within their business. It should also be noted that the author provides a catering technical help
line for its members, as well as occasional training workshops for those setting up or evaluating in-store catering enterprises.

This is one of a series of reports published by the author as part of our Garden Industry Monitor series. Garden Centres: Who visits, who buys and what do they think?, published in October 2006, provides a detailed profile of garden centre visitors and is essential reading for retailers who want to understand their customers.

This report draws upon some of the data from the garden centre visitor report for readers’ convenience, but both reports remain indispensable for garden retailers.
