Replacements Drive Revenues of Water Heaters Market
The U.S. water heaters market is mature and by nature highly saturated with demand from a highly lucrative installed base, which requires constant replacements. Although the market is stable, if the building construction industry decides to downscale construction, it would influence the demand for new water heaters and adversely affect manufacturers that focus on the new construction market. "However, new construction in the United States has reached new record rates, stimulating demand for new water heaters and increasing the number of units needing replacement in the future," says the analyst of the study. "Delivering water heaters to the market is a critical challenge for manufacturers, and supplying the product to contractors is probably the single most important step in the distribution process."

Distribution channels have been fighting for the same contractor base and retail distributors have made significant gains since the mid 1990s in convincing contractors to purchase from them. In general, wholesale channels have larger availability of models and specialty lines, whereas retail chains focus on high volumes and low product margins. In 2005, the two channels seem to have come to a standstill. Retail and wholesale distributors are evaluating their market shares and it is not certain which of the two is going to implement changes to garner increased market share.

Mergers and Acquisitions in this Mature Market Reduce Instances of Price Wars
In the United States, gas-fired water heaters have the highest sales in areas where gas is easily available. A comparison of total electricity with gas usage on a national scale through 2020 indicates that the differences between installed gas appliances and electric appliances are likely to remain constant. Today’s natural gas water heaters offer excellent performance, reliability, and low price, making them the preferred choice among homeowners and contractors.

Revenues spiked in 2003 due to ANSI Z21.10.1-2001, which required that the design of water heaters 'shall not ignite flammable vapors outside the water heating created by the spilling of gasoline onto the floor.' The cost added to water heaters in the United States was as much as 30.0 percent to the cost of gas units. Mergers and acquisitions have worked in the past to augment the strength of participants and eliminate price wars. "Before 2003, low profit margins and price competition encouraged manufacturers to lower prices to stimulate demand and gain market share," explains the analyst. "After 2003, the acquisitions of State by AO Smith and AWHC by GSW have altered the competitive landscape to just four major competitors and enabled the market to set higher prices and recoup some of the losses incurred before 2003."
