This report analyses the UK electrical wholesale market which, in 2000, had estimated sales of £2.84bn. Major product categories sold by electrical wholesalers are cables, consumer units, fuses, circuit breakers, wiring accessories and lighting products. Most equipment sold by electrical wholesalers is used either directly, or indirectly, in building and construction projects.

An analysis is given of the output of the construction industry, in which housebuilding and commercial work are particularly important for wholesalers. The repair and maintenance aspect of the construction industry, an important source of business for smaller contractors, is also included. The report gives market value data for UK supply of major types of electrical equipment.

The report profiles leading electrical wholesalers, the main companies being Edmundson Electrical Ltd, Hagemeyer (UK) Ltd (formally Newey and Eyre Group Ltd), WF Electrical PLC, Rexel Senate Ltd and CEF Holdings Ltd. The main customer categories for electrical wholesalers are electrical contractors, of which there are 21,285 Vat-registered enterprises. Other customer groups are panel builders, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), large end users and DIY customers.

Current issues are discussed, which include training, the problems of counterfeit products, trends and e-commerce. The UK electrical wholesale market is dominated by overseas companies. Consolidated Electrical Distributors (CED) of the US owns Edmundson Electrical Ltd, Hagemeyer (of the Netherlands) owns both Hagemeyer (UK) Ltd (formally Newey and Eyre Group Ltd) and WF Electrical, while Rexel Senate Ltd is owned by Pinault-Printemps-Redoute of France.

Future trends are likely to include increased branding of outlets, greater use of the Internet for e-commerce, and increased competition from DIY stores and possibly builders' merchants groups.
