Vietnam: Subscriber Growth and Operator Viability Questioned as Privatization Approaches
According to the ITU, Vietnam’s telecommunications sector growth is eclipsed by that of the People’s Republic of China. Given that the country of 83m inhabitants has a mobile penetration rate of only 22 percent and a fixed penetration rate of 7 percent, the fact that this growth will continue is undeniable, but Senior Analyst Marc Einstein advises caution given that the Vietnamese government is gearing up for privatization next year, as the number of active mobile subscribers in the country is in dispute and the advent of a seventh mobile player this month will bring already intense competition to even higher levels.
Bangladesh: Prepaid Competition Nets 10m New Customers
By year-end 2006, we forecast the Bangladesh mobile subscriber base to reach the 20m mark—almost double the actual number of subscriptions at YE2005. Aggressive prepaid competition drives this growth and the potential for organic expansion remains. Analyst Jane Buenaventura looks at the key issues for operators in the market, particularly the challenge of maintaining profitable growth in a market where prepaid average revenue per subscription has dropped to the US$5 level.
