European Sleep Diagnostics and Associated Data Management Systems

Description: This Frost & Sullivan research service titled European Markets for Sleep Diagnostics and its Data Management Systems provides an overview of market dynamics, key drivers and restraints. It includes an analysis of market trends in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Benelux and Scandinavia. In this research, expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: fixed polysomnograph, portable polysomnograph, high-end screeners, actigraphs and data management systems.

Technologies
The following technologies are covered in this research:

Fixed Polysomnograph: This refers to stationary, full-channel polysomnographs that are used for in-lab overnight studies and research-purpose highly sophisticated polysomnographs (PSGs) with advanced features. These include monitoring of the patient's respiration, heart rhythm, electrophysiological signals and movement which is graphically recorded during sleep and the sleep quality is determined on the basis of the sleep structure.

Portable Polysomnograph: This includes all full and partial channel portable polysomnographs that make a recording of minimum seven parameters, including EEG, EOG, chin EMG, ECG, airflow, respiratory effort and oxygen saturation. They may not necessarily have all the 16 channels on a standard PSG. Portable PSGs may be attended or unattended depending on the type of device.

High-end Screeners: These refer to ambulatory, high-end screeners excluding EEG measurement, but including breathing parameters and are technically termed respiratory polygraphs.

Actigraphs: Actigraphs have been used to study sleep/wake patterns for over 25 years. They are slowly becoming the unexampled standard for unbiased evaluation of sleep for the diagnosis of sleep-related disorders .The advantage of actigraphy over traditional PSG is that actigraphy devices can conveniently record continuously for 24 hours a day for days, weeks or even longer. The actigraph is a very simple, easy-to-use and inexpensive product for assessing specific sleep disorders.

Data Management Systems: Data management systems used at sleep centres offer benefits such as patient-centric operations, reinforced workflow, advanced lab scheduling, access to all patient data, reports and associated documents and automatic management of diagnostic studies, among others.

Summary: Market Overview
Increasing Awareness of Impact of Untreated Sleep Disorders to Promote Market Growth

Sleep diagnostics is a relatively new market in the European patient monitoring industry. Clinicians and healthcare delivery personnel are becoming increasingly aware of the co-morbidities and consequences of unattended sleep disorders.. The increasing number of road accidents and declining workplace productivity levels caused by prolonged sleep deprivation are emphasising the importance of early detection of sleep disorders. The increased acceptance of telemedicine and rising awareness of the negative impact of untreated sleep disorders are all set to drive diagnostic volumes in the region.

The market, though relatively stagnant last year, is experiencing steady transition towards growth. Rising healthcare expenditures in the European Union have prompted industry personnel to deliver less expensive alternative technologies to screen the masses. Here, solution vendors will have to utilise resources wisely and focus on innovative product development to create inexpensive, ambulatory systems that are reliable and extensively validated to be comparable to the ‘gold standard’ of polysomnography. "Robust and inexpensive sleep diagnostic systems will drive the market into a rapid growth stage" notes the analyst of this research service. "An entrepreneurial trend in the European healthcare service sector is expected to promote market expansion, with an increasing number of solution providers emerging in the market offering innovative technologies."

Enhanced Focus on Product Development Crucial for Market Success

Presently, the low level of awareness amongst healthcare authorities is discouraging government-funded research. Hence, there is need for improved cognisance among general practitioners and multidisciplinary physicians, of the links between sleep disorders and cardiac and neuro anomalies. In addition, the link between sleep therapy and such disorders should be exploited to increase screening and further the diagnosis of sleep abnormalities.

"Technological developments and exhaustive technical validation will help sleep diagnostic system vendors ensure accuracy, reliability and cost-effectiveness," explains the analyst. "They will need to create a strong relationship between production costs and technical sufficiency of the equipment. This underlines the need for innovative product development." Apart from this, they will need to formulate strategies to promote inexpensive, ambulatory screeners and actigraphs. Altering their focus from traditional segments towards increased screening of the population will indirectly raise demand for extended sleep diagnostic studies. Solution providers at the forefront of product development will need to create superior performing diagnostic applications to leverage their position in the future. This dedication to R&D will ensure more accurate and reliable, cost-effective solutions in the market.
