Germany is touted to be Europe's powerful engine of economic growth. The country's automotive industry is not just a key participant in the domestic economy but is also the third largest in the world. Despite economic upheavals and an unremarkable domestic market for vehicles, automotive manufacturers were bolstered by the performance of the exports segment in 2000-2002. For the fifth time in a row, manufacturers managed to produce more than 5.0 million vehicles in 2002. Production is likely to reach 5.4 million units in 2007.

The German automotive market is dominated by the passenger cars segment in terms of units sold as well as in terms of revenue. The manufacturing segment was propelled by exports as German vehicles and engines are preferred worldwide.

The German economy, its political issues, and policies have a significant influence on the automotive industry. The political initiatives of Bundestag and Bundesrat with respect to labor market reforms according to Hartz proposals will also have an impact on the automotive industry.
