Strategic Analysis of Selected European SCADA and DCS Markets
Description:
New Product Developments Reduce Differentiation between SCADA and DCS Systems
Continual advances in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and distributed control system (DCS) technologies have meant that new product developments are generating elements, which are common to both systems. As a result, differences between SCADA and DCS systems have become less straightforward and new SCADA systems increasingly offer features such as in-built redundancy that are traditionally associated with DCS products. Moreover, DCS vendors are also focusing on integration with systems such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and modern DCS systems do not differentiate between functioning in a SCADA sense over a wide area or as a DCS in a specific plant.

Additional Information
Need for Improved Efficiency Drives SCADA and DCS Markets
The growing need for manufacturers to improve efficiency and maintain profitability is resulting in better opportunities for SCADA and DCS suppliers. "Increasing cost of raw materials along with competition from low-cost producers in China and elsewhere has driven plant modernization and forced European manufacturers to cut costs," notes the analyst of this research service. "The net effect should see continued investment in automation and control solutions such as SCADA and DCS as these systems are vital in achieving production synergies and eliminating costs in the manufacturing process."
An added factor aiding the uptake of SCADA and DCS systems is the enhanced value proposition derived from new product developments. Advancements in SCADA technologies have resulted in improved IT compatibility with the capability to support higher-level business systems such as ERP, manufacturing execution systems (MES), production management, and performance analysis and control. Similarly, developments on the DCS front have seen the focus widen from the traditional process control to an extended range of applications such as production management, safety instrumented systems, information management and documentation, all handled in one single system.
Manufacturers Focus on Improving Client Relationships
With a majority of revenues originating from retrofits and services, the service element is becoming increasingly important in the European SCADA and DCS markets. In this respect, while DCS manufacturers benefit from supplying directly to end-users, many SCADA manufacturers are being restrained from the market as system integrators provide services. In addressing this, major SCADA suppliers have already started adopting a supply model, which delivers services directly to the end user. Consequently, this trend could signal a focus by the larger firms on their client relationships, making it more difficult for smaller or less capable SCADA and DCS suppliers to compete.
"With an increasing number of multinational clients sourcing fully integrated systems from one-stop suppliers, suppliers of SCADA and DCS systems can benefit from offering an extensive product portfolio, with bespoke full-configuration installation support," says the analyst. "This is an imperative and effective way of defending against competition from less customised products."
