US and EU Secure Network Integration Markets

Frost & Sullivan, May 2005

Secure Network Integration (SNI) describes the information architecture that is designed and implemented, in order to secure all facets of an organization to meet security and compliancy needs. The SNI market is further defined as the policies, procedures, methods, and techniques that protect and defend information and information systems by ensuring availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality and non-repudiation. This study covers US and EU market drivers and restraints, market trends, spending forecasts along with a competitive analysis. This study includes recommendations to improve market share through identifying strategic market trends.

Integrated Approach to Security Drives Demand for Secure Network Integration

The growing complexity of security attacks world over necessitates a more comprehensive and sophisticated security solution. Secure network integration (SNI) is emerging as the answer to an organization’s need to protect and defend its entire information architecture. Both government and private organizations are realizing that one-off fixes such as a firewall may be insufficient to prevent loss of mission critical information, and are turning to SNI to offer a more integrated approach. Integrated security architecture besides defending the network against external and internal threats, must also strike a balance between the need for access and the need for protection.

This Frost & Sullivan research offers a comprehensive analysis of the SNI market in the United States and Europe. In addition to analyzing key drivers and restraints and compliance issues, the study offers revenue forecasts and competitive analysis for the SNI market. The detailed forecasts will help companies focus on their areas of strength and growth, and refine their positioning strategies.

Secure Network Integration Set to Grow at a Steady Pace

The rising security needs and compliancy issues are opening up new growth opportunities for SNI with the market yet to peak in both the United States and Europe. In the United States, spending on SNI is expected to increase from $7.5 billion in 2005 to almost $25 billion in 2012. The key driver for SNI market in the United States is the minimum-security compliance standards for specific industries, such as the health and financial industries. Sarbanes-Oxley, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Basel II and Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) are just some of the compliancy issues that are spurring demand for SNI solutions.

Around 2008, once standardization and compliancy issues are resolved in Europe, the demand for SNI is likely to increase significantly. In order to make headway in Europe, companies need to understand the cultural differences between the countries in the European Union (EU). "Cultural positioning by a thorough understanding of the local needs and security desires is advisable," says the analyst of this research. "This can be accomplished by either establishing an office in the particular country or through strategic acquisitions in local markets."

DoD Presents Maximum Growth Opportunities

The Department of Defense (DoD), which constitutes 48 percent of the governmental market is the largest customer for SNI. In 2005, the DoD reportedly spent $1,983 million on products and services to secure data and systems. The emergence of the global information grid bandwidth expansion (GIG-BE) program, to support the increased information sharing across the entire DoD, is another reason for the increasing investment in information assurance technologies such as SNI.

Companies that want to exploit the opportunities offered by the DoD must pay close attention to the 2,000-page guide to the acquisition and use of information assurance technology that the DoD issued in August 2004. "While the large, complex contracts will continue to go to top-tier defense suppliers, smaller companies will need to get the proper credentials and read the 2,000-page acquisition guide in order to work directly with the DoD," explains the analyst. "However, an easier route would be to subcontract with the large tier-one defense companies."
