Summary: Market Overview

Demand from Utilities Help North American Underground Transmission and Distribution Cables Market Grow

Due to the August 2003 blackout, the power transmission and distribution sector in North America witnessed a considerable rise in the demand for uninterrupted power transmission and as a result, utilities geared up to invest in the underground power lines. "Investments from utilities to upgrade the existing power lines and lay new ones gave a boost to the underground cables market which witnessed an approximately 11 percent growth in 2004," says the analyst. This move by the utilities, backed by the low maintenance and operations cost of the underground lines, has greatly enhanced the uptake of underground transmission and distribution cables.

Currently, the market does not have sufficient cable manufacturers to meet the robust demand from utilities, causing a delay in supply. Since manufacturers take at least 20 to 25 weeks to supply cables, utilities are forced to place their orders well in advance. An increase in the production capacity in the cables market will not only allow manufacturers to supply cables on time, but will also garner significant revenues by reaching out to more utilities. By cashing in on the demand from the utilities and the overseas companies, the underground cables market is expected to grow further.

Licensing Issues for Overhead Lines Benefit Underground Cables Market

Laying overhead cables is becoming increasingly tedious due to numerous delays in obtaining permits and licenses, and this has aided the growth of underground cables market. Despite the cost of laying underground lines being ten times more than overhead lines, the former has been gaining popularity since overhead power lines require more regular and expensive servicing. Moreover, residents in the vicinity of an overhead line fear that electromagnetic field will affect their health.

To allay such challenges, utilities are willing to invest heavily in underground cables. Even governments have financially aided the laying of underground power cables, giving a boost to the market. "Even when investments in new underground lines reduce, there is enough scope for market growth as future revenues are most likely to be generated from replacement of existing cable networks," notes the analyst.
