A Nurses Guide to Caring for Cardiac Intervention Patients
John Wiley and Sons Ltd, Jan 2007, Pages: 264
Cardiac intervention is a fast expanding field of medicine that is reducing the need for cardiac surgery. A Nurses Guide to Caring for Cardiac Intervention Patients will enable nurses to fully prepare their patients and families for various cardiac intervention procedures.
Coverage includes:
- Explanations of what the heart condition is and how the procedure may relieve that condition - Descriptions of what the patient can expect to happen before, during and after the procedure - What nurses should observe for post procedure, and how to address any complications that may occur - Guidelines for discharge advice - Outlines for a pre and post care plan for each procedure – based on the latest research and experience.
Nurses will find the book informative on common interventional procedures, but it is also designed as a tool to be dipped into when caring for patients with more unusual procedures. This practical book includes chapters on: cardiac catheterisation; percutaneous coronary intervention; percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty; removal of femoral sheaths; cardioversion; temporary and permanent pacemakers.
This book is written with the intention of providing nurses, students and cardiac technicians with a step-by-step guide when caring for an interventional cardiology patient. Whilst nurses may find it informative on common interventional procedures it is also designed to act as a tool to be dipped into, when caring for patients with more unusual procedures.
The book is divided in two parts. In the first part each chapter describes a procedure in simple terms, and why the patient may need such a procedure. Then information detailing how to prepare a patient for that procedure is outlined. Post procedure management and what potential complications to look for are outlined. Finally, advice to provide patients upon discharge is discussed. The second part of the book describes the nursing management of the more common complications that may develop post procedure. The glossary serves not only to explain terms used throughout the book but can also be used as a quick reference guide and is eminently readable and informative as a stand alone chapter.
