The third edition of American Attitudes examines ongoing changes in the opinions of Americans and analyzes the social and demographic trends behind those changes.

The chapters covered are The Arts, Health and Medicine, Personal Outlook, Public Arena, Race, Religion, Sexual Behavior, Women’s Roles, and Work and Money. New to the third edition are the chapters on Americans’ attitudes toward the arts and health and medicine. The chapters on religion and work and money have been expanded.

Each chapter includes tables and text describing the differences and similarities in the attitudes of Americans by demographic characteristic in 1998, 1988, and 1978.

The hundreds of issues are analyzed from a range of demographic variables: men and women, who agree on most issues, but disagree sharply when they do the races, whose varying experiences over the past several hundred years have clearly left their mark on attitudes the generations, who show sharp differences in attitudes on everything from race relations to work and money and education, whose effect on attitudes is closely tied to age and income.

The data in all three editions of American Attitudes are from the General Social Survey of the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center. Norc conducts the GSS through face-to-face interviews with an independently drawn, representative sample of 1,500 to 3,000 noninstitutionalized English-speaking people aged 18 or older who live in the United States. For more details about the survey, refer to the book’s introduction.
