This report features profiles of three of India’s leading textile and apparel export companies.

Each company has devised strategies to remain viable during a period of crisis in the Indian textile industry.

Arvind Mills is the biggest denim fabric producer in Asia and the third largest in the world. In the 1990s the company over-expanded its denim fabric capacity and incurred substantial debt. But it has recently returned to profitability by cutting costs and focusing on products offering higher added value. These include innovative denim fabrics and premium quality shirtings for international brands.

GTN Group is a leading manufacturer of fine high quality cotton yarn and exports almost all its output to international markets. The company has invested heavily in new technology and moved away from commodity segments to focus on specialised products.

Vardhman Group, based in the knitwear hub of Ludhiana, is India’s biggest yarn producer and exporter as well as a leading manufacturer of greige and processed fabrics. Vardhman’s competitive edge lies in its ability to produce high quality yarns at low cost, using technology which is on a par with that employed by the world’s leading manufacturers.
