Cantv: Still Standing Strong Two Years After Liberalization

For Cantv, the transition from operating in a closed sector to operating in an open one was relatively easy due to the terms under which the company was privatized. Instead of having to participate in license auctions, Cantv‘s government-granted concession allows it to operate in diverse markets. The company realized that its natural advantages as incumbent were no guarantee for success in Venezuela’s new competitive environment, and that it needed to establish key differentiators such as high quality and
attractive service offerings. Cantv seems to be meeting these goals: 18 months have passed since the Venezuelan telecommunications market was liberalized in November 2000, and the company continues to be the leader in the arenas in which it operates. The only exception is the mobile space, where BellSouth-backed Telcel still dominates, although Cantv’s mobile arm, Movilnet, is catching up. Given the situation in Venezuela, Cantv and its competitors face the challenge of operating in a climate
characterized by political unrest and economic instability. Looking forward, however, Cantv seems fit to weather the crisis given the fact that over its 70+ years of existence, it has laid down very solid foundations in the country - the company has a nationwide network and a strong presence in the minds of consumers.
