About Industrial Embedded Systems

Integrated circuits and microchips have revolutionized industrial automation. The earliest example of a single board single purpose design is the PC/104, which had accessory boards to accommodate many application needs, but was as large as a 3.5-inch floppy disk. Chip manufacturers subsequently improvised and developed single board systems with smaller processors that can perform advanced functions. The system-on-module (SOM) and system-on-chip (SoC) are advanced computerised platforms, which comprise processors, I/O functions, and communication interfaces. They are ubiquitous and serve a broad range of applications starting from a calculator to industrial controls to space technology. Currently, more than 2 billion microcontrollers are developed and manufactured every year.

Motors in all major industries consume more than 60% of the global manufacturing industrial sector’s energy annually. We estimate that more than 7% of the global energy demand can be effectively reduced by optimizing industrial motor energy efficiency. The ISO 9000/14000 is an international energy and quality management system that emphasizes the use of specialized systems to ensure energy efficiency in the operation of compressors, motors, and pumps.

Further, the report states that one major challenge in the market is high development cost of industrial embedded system. According to Moore’s law based on astute observations, the number of transistors on an integrated circuit doubles every two years. An ideal embedded system is a low cost, compact system which features memory, processor and I/O peripherals on a single chip. However, designing the hardware of industrial embedded systems is riddled with difficulty as many compromises occur while trying to augment one function.
