Paper thin: Even as the online revolution continues a return to revenue growth is on the cards

The Pulp, Paper and Paperboard Manufacturing industry operators have faced difficult conditions over recent years. Industry revenue has recently been slumping particularly due to a drop off in demand from key downstream markets. In particular, demand from newspaper and print media publishing has plunged over the period. Industry manufacturers have implemented cost-control measures, including staff redundancies and shutting down unsustainable production mills to eliminate unused capacity. On the other hand, rising demand from online retailers is stimulating demand for industry-produced products like local paperboard. Overall, industry revenue is expected to fall at an annualised 4.2% over the five years through 2023-24, to $3.1 billion. This includes an anticipated decline of 2.4% in 2023-24.

Industry businesses mainly manufacture pulp, paper or paperboard from a variety of inputs, including woodchips, clay, lime, dyes, chemical resins and recycled paper.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
