Disenfranchised: Weak demand during the COVID-19 pandemic has decreased revenue

Franchising revenue was good before the pandemic. Income was up, consumer and business sentiment were positive and revenue was tracking upwards. Yet, all of this came crashing down with the COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020. Lockdown periods and trading restrictions led to temporary store closures, while outdoor businesses like home gardening services were forced to cease operating. Work-from-home directives left office spaces vacant, while food-services businesses juggled with strict and continually evolving density quota limits. Tourism and travel were also off-limits thanks to temporary state border closures and international travel bans. All-in-all, franchising businesses struggled with revenue falling consecutively over the two years through 2020-21.

Franchising is a method of growing a business in which a franchise owner (franchisee) is granted, for a fee, the right to offer, sell or distribute goods or services under a business system determined by the business founder (franchisor). The franchisor supports the franchised business group by providing leadership, guidance, training and assistance in return for ongoing service fees.
