With rising consumer interest in health and continued interest in convenient solutions to aid the perceived need for performance and wellness, the functional soft drinks market could be seen as a market sector whose time has come.

This is further reinforced by the high levels of interest from the major multinational soft drinks companies who have invested strongly in the area via acquisition and organic growth as their traditional soft drinks markets, particularly carbonates, have started to mature in many countries. The sector has seen considerable development and change, with the dynamic growth in energy drinksevident at that time having kick-started a boom in sports drinks in many countries, although there are now some signs that growth rates are slowing and the markets have started to mature.
