Each of the 76 cities profiled in Crime in America's Top-Rated Cities (cities that have been cited as the best for business and living in the United States) has its own chapter and includes citywide crime statistics for the past 20 years (1979-1998) in all major crime categories: violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault), property crimes (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft) and total crime.

Several new tables and topics have been added to this Third Edition. New tables include the Latest Anti-Crime Programs and now Arrestees Testing Positive for Drugs breaks down into Cocaine, Marijuana, Opiates and Methamphetamine. New topics include Firearms Used by Law Enforcement, Sex Offender Registration Laws, and Public Notification of the Release of Sex Offender Laws.

Each city chapter begins with an Overview of crime rates for the past 20 years. Next, Crime Statistics for all major crime categories are listed that compare the numbers of crimes and crime rates for the City, Suburbs, Metro Area and United States. Also, graphs showing crime trends are included for violent, property and total crime as a means of offering the user an added visual perspective. Crime in America's Top-Rated Cities also contains important statistics on Hate Crimes, Illegal Drugs, Correctional Facilities, Inmates and HIV/Aids, the Death Penalty, Law Enforcement Personnel, Handgun/Alcohol/Hate Crime Laws and the Chances of Becoming a Victim.

This Third Edition has been completely updated for 2000 with 17 new cities - Akron, OH Albuquerque, NM Birmingham, AL Chattanooga, TN Columbia, SC Gary, IN Jackson, MS Lansing, MI Louisville, KY Manchester, NH Memphis, TN Omaha, NE Providence, RI Reno, NV Rochester, NY Spokane, WA, and Wichita, KS. Plus, cities from the previous edition that made this year's cut have been revised and refreshed with new and updated data.

In addition to the comprehensive statistics provided for each city, Crime in America's Top-Rated Cities contains three Appendices for more information. Appendix A defines Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA). Appendix B lists current addresses and phone numbers for all included city police Departments and Appendix C defines the different types of crimes covered in this resource and provides and explanation of terms for the table on laws relating to alcohol use and driving.
