The Swiss telecoms market entered a new phase in 2006, when Swisscom had to facilitate access to its copper network, allowing competitors to enter the fixed line market. Swisscom’s fixed line revenues decreased significantly over the past two years, mostly due to heightened competition, caused a fall in monthly flat rates and a decline in retail traffic volume. In addition, mobile telephony has been substituting fixed voice services and VoIP made a significant impact on the market. Despite these pressures, a surge in broadband adoption has helped to offset the decline in fixed line revenues. In the mobile space, Swiss consumers have the choice between five mobile network operators and numerous MVNOs. As the mobile market inches closer to the 100 percent penetration mark, operators’ focus is shifting from customer acquisition to customer retention. Replicating a model employed elsewhere in Western Europe, Switzerland’s wireless carriers opened up their networks to either low-cost or niche segments targeting MVNOs. In addition, with operational 3G networks deployed by the three major mobile operators, mobile data applications will play a pivotal role in boosting mobile service revenue growth going forward.
