India is one of the fastest growing markets for mobile technology. The country’s mobile operators have been providing services based initially on GSM, but subsequently a substantial CDMA presence has been added. While India moved into advanced forms of mobile technology, including GPRS and EDGE, the country has been waiting for the adoption of 3G. But first the government needed to finalise its 3G licensing arrangements, a process that had been subject to repeated and increasingly frustrating delays. Finally the 3G auction was held in the first half of 2010. As the results of the licence allocation process emerged, the successful operators began planning their roll out strategies. This report looks at the mobile market in India from the viewpoint of the technology platforms in place and those being put in place.
