2003 - A strategic year of importance
Datamonitor, Jan 2004, Pages: 18
Introduction
2003 was an important year for both vendors and clients. It was clear that the user/vendor community had started to detect a gradual thawing of the frosty sentiment which has dogged the IT industry since the dot.com crash. Also, vendors started to grasp a wide range of technology initiatives and go to market strategies. This paper provides an overview and outlook for the most important elements.
Scope
This brief covers provides commentary on the development of the following market elements:
Application software: Application refinement and upgrades, On Demand Applications, SME and vertical editions
Concepts and initiatives: On Demand, Verticals and SME, ESBs and SOAs, Integration from application software vendors
Technology: Linux, RFID, Web services
Highlights
What is clear is that, for most vendors, the future will consist of becoming increasingly able to demonstrate proficiency in a broader range of disciplines than ever before, in order to appeal to the widest possible audience - whilst actually being able to execute. The future involves a significant amount of ‘plate spinning’ for many vendors.
On Demand has stimulated much discussion on pricing. Indeed, it could fundamentally shift the way companies pay for IT. In the early stages, it will undoubtedly cause headaches amongst both vendors and users, as IT budgets are set well in advance of them actually being spent.
RFID's moment could have arrived in 2003 as Wal-mart outlined requirements for its 100 largest providers of pallets and cases to RFID-enable them by the start of 2005. These suppliers account for one-eighth (a billion cases) of Wal-mart’s annual received shipments. The US Department of Defense issued a similar mandate with the same deadline.
