Summary: |
Background Under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in cooperation with the States and other agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is responsible for regulating the production and use of pesticides in the United States. This report was developed to provide the regulatory industry, and those interested in the regulatory industry, a snapshot of all major changes registered with the EPA during the 2006 calendar year, as well as providing the ranking of companies and chemicals in terms of size and most prevalent.
This report is intended to present objective data and trend information. It reflects the best available information on pesticide registrations as provided by the U.S.EPA. It does not attempt to interpret, reach conclusions, or make inferences about the data.
Part 1: New in 2006
NEW COMPANIES in 2006 Each year a significant number of new companies are registered with EPA. Some of the new listings represent start up companies and others represent mergers of companies with a long-standing involvement in the pesticide industry. During the 2006 calendar year, 507 new companies registered with EPA, fifteen percent less than the 596 companies registered in 2005. Of the new 2006 companies, 337 of them registered products during the year. The number of international companies registering with EPA in 2006 was more than double the number of companies registering in 2005. Thirty companies posted international addresses, including China, South Africa, Australia, Denmark and Italy, to name a few.
New companies were established in 49 of the 50 states with Alaska being the only state without the establishment of a new pesticide company. Florida (54), California (45), and Georgia (37) lead the nation in location for new companies, while 14 states show the registration of only one or two companies.
NEW PRODUCTS in 2006 There were 4,305 new products registered in 2006, which was an increase of 15.4 percent over new products introduced in 2005. While more products were introduced in 2006, a smaller percentage of the products were sub-registrations. In 2005, 62% or 2,314 were sub-registrations, compared to 1,793 or forty-two percent for 2006. The Industry Report organizes all new products by company name and indicates the number of sites and pests registered for each. Fifteen companies registered more than 25 products, including Arrow-Magnolia International Lp, Bayer Cropscience Lp, Chemtura USA Corporation, Etigra LLC, Nufarm Americas Inc., Spectrum Group, Valent Biosciences Corporation, Syngenta Crop Protection, Inc., The Andersons Lawn Fertilizer Division, Inc., United Phosphorus Inc. and E. I. Du Pont De Nemours And Co., Inc. Arysta Lifescience North America Corporation registered over 150 products and Wellmark International registered 281.
FORMULATIONS In new product introductions in 2006, Soluble Concentrate was again the most popular formulation, representing 26.4% of all new registrations or 1138 products. Ready-to-Use was also a popular formulation, with slightly more than 20% of all new products registered. Three other popular formulations were Pressurized Liquid, Granular and Emulsifiable Concentrate, representing 10%, 10% and 9% of all new products respectively. When this product mix is compared to total active products, the same five formulations hold the same position with roughly the same percentages. In contrast, one product was registered as a Pressurized Dust.
PESTICIDE TYPES 2006 registrations included fifty- four pesticide types. Disinfectants, Fungicides, and Insecticides lead the categories with each having over 1,000 products, while the categories of Avicide, Insecticide Synergist, Soil Fumigant, and Sporicide show a single registration.
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS When evaluating active ingredients, it is important to note that many actives have synonyms. Nonetheless, it is beneficial to evaluate all product registrations in a given year to determine if any new actives appear in registrations. In 2006, sixty-five new active ingredients appeared for the very first time in product registrations. Bioallethrin was used in 596 products while VEL 4283 and E,Z-3,13-Octadecadien-1-ol were used in only two. Many other newly registered active ingredients did not have any products associated with them in 2006. Additional tables are included in this section to detail all new products registered with each new active ingredient, the Product Name, EPA Registration Number, Company Name, Percent of Active and Chemical Name.
RESTRICTED USE PESTICIDES Forty-two new products were registered as “Restricted Use.” Arysta Lifescience North America Corporation registered 10 of the 42 products. The Product Name, EPA Registration Number, Company Name, Percent of Active and Chemical Name are detailed in the Industry Report.
NEW MRIDs Four hundred seventy-four companies submitted 10,562 MRIDs. Activity in this area precedes product registration and often indicates planned products. Nineteen companies submitted over 100 records each with three companies, Bayer Cropscience LP, Dow Agrosciences LLC, and Syngenta Crop Protection, Inc. submitting over 600 records each. Our table identifies the submitter number, company name and number of submissions made during the 2006 calendar year.
NEW PRODUCTS BY SITE This section provides information on new products organized by site, displaying the number of pests each product controls. New products for the following sites are provided: Wheat, Soybeans, Corn, Golf Courses, and Wood Destroying Organisms. We chose these particular sites because of their value to the industry; similar searches can be conducted on any pest or site as part of our online KNOWtify service.
Part 2: The Top 25 The Top 25 is intended to provide a quick look at the pesticide industry from eight different perspectives. While regulatory activity is recorded for 2006 in Part 1 of the Industry Report, the data rankings presented in Part 2 pull from the total set of U.S. EPA data.
The following rankings are presented: - Pesticide Companies by Number of Products Registered - Most Active Companies for Product Introductions in 2006 - Most Active Ingredients in New Products - MRID Records Submitted in 2006 - Sites Controlled by Actively Registered Pesticide Products - Pests Controlled by Actively Registered Pesticide Products - Pests on New Pesticide Products in 2006 - Sites on New Pesticide Products in 2006
While the top rankings in some categories might be anticipated, this section does reveal facts that are not otherwise easily identified. For example, when considering all products, the most common site remains bathroom premise, appearing on over 21,000 existing products and also being the second most referenced site on new product introductions in 2006, appearing on 857 products. The number one pest across all registered products remains Animal Pathogenic Bacteria (g- And G+ Vegetative), listed as a pest on over 36,000 products. Pseudomonas SPP and HIV-i (human Immunodeficiency Virus) hold the number two and three positions of most- listed pests. All details are included in the full Report.
