The World Static Transfer Switch (STS) market is a well-established market, and it is expected to record low but steady growth rates over the period 2009-2015. The success of the STS market hinges on the expected recovery in the construction of new datacenter facilies and the revonation and retrofit of existing buildings. Increasing power protection requirements among end users, and an unreliable power grid in some regions, are also fostering market growth. This research service analyzes the present and future market trends along with the revenues, unit shipment and prices forecasts. Supported by identifying the drivers and restraints, as well as challenges, facing these markets.

Steady Demand from Critical Applications Steer the World Static Transfer Switch Markets Forward

The well-established world STS markets are expected to grow steadily over the period 2009-2015, bolstered by demand from developing regions such as Asia and Latin America as well as the solid customer base in the traditional North American and European markets. “While demand fluctuations slowed the market down during early 2009, the need to provide continuous power supply to critical applications will sustain this market despite the economic slump,” says the analyst of this research. “In particular, the restarting of datacenter construction projects that were put on the back burner during 2008 will ignite demand for new STS units.” Datacenters comprise the major end-user segment for STS, accounting for nearly 55 percent of global sales. Datacenters have very high power requirements and use distributed power to reduce power demands during peak times, limited capacity, and transmission problems. Emergency power equipment is kept in readiness to deal with power interruptions or outages.

During the short term, new construction activity is likely to decrease significantly owing to the lack of credit and shrinking company budgets. “Until non-residential construction recovers its past levels, demand for power quality and backup power equipment is projected to come mainly from existing buildings,” explains the analyst. “Therefore, manufacturers will need to offer flexible products that can meet different applications and can easily be integrated with the existing systems.” As most backup power and power quality equipment meets critical applications, companies are unlikely to cut down their investment in power quality equipment despite limited budgets. World STS market participants must target critical end-user sectors including healthcare, datacenters, military, and government among others to ensure forward market progression. Additionally, with the proliferation of IT applications, there is a rising need for consistent power supply and it is imperative for facilities to ensure backup power for their activities.

Market participants must constantly strive toward designing and manufacturing quality equipment with added features and performance capabilities to meet end users’ needs and requirements. Most end-users are unaware of the features and advantages of STS utilization, inhibiting the demand for new units and posing a challenge to STS manufacturers. Initiatives must be underway to heighten awareness of the product and highlight existing advancements. In this regard, consulting engineers have an important role to play as, on many occasions, they determine whether or not the facility requires an STS.
