Components for R-OADMs '06
Information Gatekeepers Inc, Aug 2006
This report investigates the components used by the systems known as Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (R-OADMs.) These devices are currently available in equipment from major equipment vendors. These products are based on a variety of sub-system technologies that have been developed largely by small start-up companies.
The flexibility introduced by R-OADMs has the potential to offer great operations cost savings as well as possibly capital cost savings and, ultimately, new revenue sources. Because of these potentials, this system development is of great interest to all major carriers. Even in this time of extremely tight capital budgets, everyone is interested in investments that offer substantial operations savings.
This report describes the R-OADM technology, the market potential with detailed forecasts and the vendors involved in the component market.
This is an update of earlier reports on the same subject from IGI. This report contains completely new forecast rationale, expanded technical material. In addition, its focus is on Wavelength Selective Switches, which has become the gold standard of R-OADMs.
In preparing this series of reports, the author spoke with executive representatives of the major vendors in this area and had input from major prospective users. This input was used to sharpen the focus of the forecasts. That input was also used to improve the scenario that was the basis of our forecast. In addition, we now have the announced plans of several of the major network players, to help understand how the market is going to develop.
