THE PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET: PERU - REVIEW

Peru is often overlooked when discussing the rapid-growth economies of South America. While it has neither the size nor the wealth of Brazil or Argentina, the country has a population that exceeds 30 million in 2011, and has recorded strong economic growth in recent years. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), GDP growth is expected to increase by 6.5% in real terms in 2011. GDP per capita wealth has risen, especially around Lima, leading to a sizeable urban population that demands improved healthcare and has the ability to pay for it. This economic environment is expected to encourage drug consumption. In legal terms, Peru is continuing to implement its National Strategic Plan to combat counterfeiting and piracy.

The Peruvian pharmaceutical market is the second smallest in the region. The market is expected to increase by a moderate CAGR in dollar terms between 2011 and 2016. Pharmaceutical expenditure per capita is the lowest in the region. This means that there are growth opportunities, as the economy is expected to perform well in the forecast period. The market increased five times between 1995 and 2010. In January 2011, the Israeli Teva Pharmaceutical Industries announced that it was acquiring Infarmasa from The Rohatyn Group (TRG) and Altra Investments. Teva commented that the combination of Medco, which is Teva's existing operation in Peru, and Infarmasa would create one of the top two pharmaceutical companies in the country.

Major Peruvian pharmaceutical wholesalers include Química Suiza, Albis and Drokasa. Química Suiza imports, produces, markets and distributes pharmaceuticals, personal care products and equipment for the industrial sector. The company has offices in Arequipa, Chiclayo, Cusco, Huancayo, Iquitos, Lima, Piura and Trujillo. Química Suiza also has a regional presence with subsidiaries in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. The company has six divisions. In February 2011, Química Suiza acquired the pharmacy chain Boticas BTL for an undisclosed transaction value. With this acquisition, Química Suiza will control about 300 pharmacies in Peru; the company already owns Boticas Mifarma in the retail pharmacy sector.
