WiMAX and Wi-Fi: Unwiring the World
Pyramid Research, Inc, Jan 2003, Pages: 53
This report aims to Size the Opportunity, Analyze the Players and Demistify the Hype.
WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access and it is the latest and most-hyped, generation of fixed wireless technology in years. What differentiates WiMAX from earlier broadband wireless access (BWA) iterations is standardization. Chipsets are currently custom-built for each broadband wireless access vendor, adding time and cost to the process. Intel, Fujitsu and others would like to bring scale to the market and, ideally, create a larger market along the way.
The vendors behind WiMAX hope to do for last-mile wireless broadband what the Wi-Fi Alliance did for Wi-Fi. And while the story is compelling, the truth is much more complex.
Separating Fact from Fiction This report takes a practical look at WiMAX and how operators plan (or don't plan) to take advantage of it. We conducted more than 100 hours of interviews with vendors and operators to better understand WiMAX's impact around the globe. The report also includes six-year forecasts of broadband wireless subscribers for more than 40 countries.
Looking Ahead We believe that WiMAX will succeed commercially, but not easily, nor quickly. There is a great deal of vendor resistance, operator reluctance and general market confusion at work. WiMAX will evolve in two distinct stages. The first stage begins in 2004, with equipment that will cost and function a lot like existing broadband wireless equipment. Not very exciting. The second stage is where the true disruptions will begin.
WiMAX will bring broadband to the masses At the end of the day, WiMAX is all about delivering low-cost broadband wireless access. Regardless of which vendor comes out on top, it is the millions of people in rural and developing markets who stand to gain the most from WiMAX.
In this report, we will answer the following questions: -What do operators think about WiMAX? -What broadband wireless access (BWA) vendors are best-positioned to succeed? -What are the hottest markets for fixed wireless? -Is Intel over-promising with WiMAX? -Will interference be the downfall of WiMAX?
Companies mentioned in this report include:
-BWA Vendors Airspan Networks Alvarion Aperto Networks Flarion Intel Motorola Navini Networks NextNet Wireless Proxim Redline Communications SR Telecom WaveRider -Major Carriers Nextel BellSouth British Telecom Korea Telecom Verizon
-Mesh Networking Tropos Networks
-Satellite Hughes Network Systems
-Wireless ISPs (WISPs) Prairie iNet SkyRiver Communications SkyPipeline U.S. Wireless Online
Who This Report is For -Operators that need to understand how WiMAX will improve their bottom line and which vendors to keep an eye on. -Vendors who want to know how fixed wireless operators perceive WiMAX. -Consultants who want a strategic understanding of Wi-Fi and WiMAX. -Investors who want to understand the revenue potential of WiMAX and the emerging vendors.
