Internet Trends in Latin America: Adoption and Competitive Overview
Pyramid Research, Inc, Jan 2004, Pages: 58
Internet services are a key area of the telecommunications market. The importance of the Internet for a telecommunications service provider strategy is twofold. First, the rapid adoption rate of Internet accounts contrasts with the stable or declining revenue trend in traditional telephony services making the provision of Internet access extremely appealing. Second, the Internet platform enables telcos to explore alternative revenue sources such as the provision of value added content or applications and the possibility to provide remotely manage services for enterprises.
In every Latin American country, Internet access is the fastest growing segment of the telecommunications market. We expect the number of Internet accounts in Latin America to grow three times faster than fixed telephony lines in the next five years. Internet access revenues will surpass US$5.3bn by YE2008 not including the rapidly growing prepaid and public access markets. Only a handful of players in the region have managed to develop the right combination of reach, proprietary content and marketing to capitalize on this opportunity. The top 10 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the region concentrate roughly 50% of total Internet accounts.
