The Taiwanese WAN Industry, 3Q 2003 Beyond
Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) [a division of Institute for Information Industry (III)], Dec 2003, Pages: 35
With the peak PC retail season in the second half, large scale tenders in China and France, and growing procurement by Western European and Japanese operators, Taiwanese WAN shipment value hit US$363 million in the third quarter of 2003, growing 7.8% sequentially. Demand for integrated devices was on the rise, and the industry witnessed a higher share of high-end device shipments. For xDSL, wireless ADSL and IP DSLAM saw strong growth from the second quarter, and DOCSIS 2.0 has already become the mainstream in cable modem product mix.
In the fourth quarter of 2003, xDSL will be the main driver of WAN growth and the notebook PC will float NIC analog modem shipments. Product maturity is pushing prices and shipment value down, and as the home networking market gets off the ground, Taiwanese WAN makers face the threat of modularization, which would weaken their role in the network equipment industry.
4Q 2003 shipment forecasts for analog modem, cable modem, and xDSL. Special discussions examining the impact of increasing maturation of WAN, the negative aspects of the rising home network market for WAN equipment makers, and the growing potential of the Chinese broadband market. Taiwanese WAN industry review of the third quarter of 2003, covering shipment value, shipment volume, volume by tier, product mix, business types, shipment destinations, production locations, manufacturer rankings, industry concentration and major maker competitive profiles.
