Video & DVD Retail & Hire Market Report 2005
Key Note Publications Ltd, January 2005
This report estimates that, in 2004, the UK video and digital versatile disc (DVD) retail and hire market was worth £3.47bn, a rise of 14.7% on 2003. The retail sector is far larger than the hire sector, and the percentage of overall sales and volumes accounted for by outright purchases continues to increase.
The main area driving the market is DVD retail sales, which have rocketed since 2001. In 2002, retail sales of DVDs exceeded those of the video home system (VHS) cassette for the first time and the sales gap between the two formats has been widening ever since. The rentals sector has also shown a strong shift in the preference for DVDs and, in 2003, demand for the format surpassed that for video rentals.
Among the main problems currently facing the industry are the twin challenges of traditional and Internet piracy. Technological advances in DVD copying equipment have made the work of DVD counterfeiters easier. In addition, the increasing use of broadband for the illegal downloading of films and programmes via the Internet is adding to the costs and losses that the industry is facing.
Since 2001, there have been important sales and marketing developments in both the retail and hire sectors of the market. The increasing importance of supermarkets as key sales outlets is significant in the retail sector. In addition, growth in the popularity of online purchases — particularly of DVDs — is also apparent, with the percentage of adults buying DVDs online increasing substantially since 2001. One of the significant developments in the hire sector has been the recent entry of companies that offer rental services over the Internet. The somewhat flagging market for video and DVD rentals is expected to be boosted by this move.
Over the next 3 years (to 2007), the video and DVD retail and hire market is forecast to show further strong growth. Increasing household penetration of DVD players and the introduction of new and innovative DVD-related technologies should sustain heightened consumer interest in the market. In the longer term, threats to the industry include the ongoing problems of piracy and counterfeiting, as well as the advent of alternative technologies that might render the DVD obsolete.
