Summary: Trend toward RIS-PACS Integration Gathering Pace

The European market for stand-alone radiology information systems (RIS) has been fairly consistent for the last few years, but recent trends indicate that sales of these systems could increase considerably by integrating them with picture archiving communication systems (PACS). In a sense, therefore, PACS may be considered a driver for the RIS market and is linked to it in such a way that when customers purchase PACS, they are motivated to upgrade their RIS. The benefits of integration are obvious, as it could greatly improve clinical workflow and simplify the work of technologists, and reduce data inconsistencies that are common in manual data entry into multiple systems. However, since both systems are intrinsically different in that RIS is a transaction-oriented system and PACS is focused on data access and the manipulation of large amounts of image data, integrating the two poses a considerable challenge.

"Despite these challenges, vendors are exploring different ways of addressing the issue of integration since healthcare IT customers are increasingly expressing their preference for RIS/PACS integration," says the analyst of this research service. "In fact, the integration of imaging modality and PACS/RIS appears to be a certainty in the future." Standardisation of RIS systems in terms of usage, applications and quality is expected to play a key role in the future growth of the market. Functional imaging has made it possible to capture even the smallest details with accuracy, and RIS can help make image storage, scheduling and data management even more efficient.

Service-oriented Approach Combined with Customisation Likely to Provide Competitive Advantage

With RIS increasingly becoming service-driven and solution-oriented, RIS vendors will have to make customers aware of their strengths in these areas. Customers will need to perceive their services as strong value additions for vendors to be able to charge higher profit margins. The ability to rapidly and efficiently execute projects and contain costs as much as possible will be a significant competitive advantage. The major trend in the market is definitely the efforts being made by RIS vendors to integrate with PACS systems to improve their capabilities.

The RIS market being highly competitive and demanding, vendors are also under pressure to provide customised solutions. Designing different solutions for individual sites will require vendors to carry out a thorough workflow analysis to identify the needs of specific customers. "To exhibit their ability to design customised solutions, vendors need to adopt a consultative approach before, during and after the RIS implementation," says the analyst. "The single work platform of PACS/RIS/EMR is the best a vendor can offer in the market."
