Case Studies in Mideast PTT Privatisation: Turk Telekom and Bezeq

Description:
After Jordan last year, Turkey and Israel are striving to become the next two Middle Eastern states to privatise their phone companies. Both efforts have been stalled by an array of false starts, snags and scandals but appear to be moving forward in full force and coming to a head this summer. This White Paper analyses the respective positions of Turk Telekom and Israel's Bezeq by situating them in the context of each country's economy and the competitive landscape of its telecommunications sector. The lack of liquidity in global equity markets suggests that both companies have picked the wrong summer to sell off their shares. Many would-be investors have lost their appetite for telecoms stocks for the time being. Some potential acquirers of Turk Telekom and Bezeq have also run into debt trouble, having spent billions of dollars on licences to operate 3G networks. Although both companies operate a family of strategic business units and subsidiaries dominating or competing in most telecoms subsectors, the main source of revenue remains fixed telephony and, to a lesser extent, mobile telephony. Therefore, their medium-term profitability rests on the success of strategies to defend market share in the face of looming competition in all market segments.
