Evalulating the Latin American Mvno Opportunity

Pyramid Research, Inc, January 2001, Pages: 11

While mobile telephone subscriptions continue strong expansion across Latin America, operator revenues have not grown at the same pace. This creates a challenge for mobile operators as they continue network buildout prior to the onset of next generation services. Additional pressure is added through regulation and technology innovation, where new competitors continue to enter the region and bandwidth capacity is increasing. Although yet to enter the region, mobile virtual network operators (Mvnos) represent a means for underlying network operators to maxi-mize revenue through a combination of partnership and service provi-sioning. Mvnos will share the risks and rewards of distributing excess capacity by selling and marketing innovative ways to communicate. This paper examines the Mvno opportunity in Latin America. It will help to identify the players to watch and the business issues at stake. Existing mobile operators trailing in the battle for market share will be the first to embrace Mvno joint ventures. In the early stages of development, Mvnos will be perceived as a way of consolidating high-revenue subscribers under a community umbrella and maintaining low churn among them.
