Biomed Outsourcing Report: Biopathways, New Targets, New Opportunities in Discovery Research

Description: A new biological paradigm, Systems Biology, has emerged with the completion of the Human Genome Project. Systems biology aims to develop a systems-level understanding of biological processes. System biology knowledge is complex and derives from a variety of scientific and technical disciplines. Progress in genomics, proteomics, computational sciences and measurement technologies will enable the understanding of biological systems. New analysis techniques, experimental methods, measurement technologies and software tools will be developed to assist in the experimental decomposition of systems and then in silico (computational) composition of systems.

The systems biology paradigm represents a huge opportunity for informatics. In drug discovery and development, researchers seek to leverage the potential of large genomics and proteomics database. Informatics is essential here-including the development of methods to represent, search and analyze data. Integration informatics will specifically integrate the data of different and dispersed functional groups. Various datasets will be managed and collapsed together for comparative analysis. It is anticipated that drug discovery research will become more productive as informatics enables researchers to deeply analyze genetic data, work faster and communicate more efficiently.

Systems biology is likely to become the dominant paradigm in biology. Medical applications as well as scientific discoveries will result from system analysis, control and design. The industry must ensure that the knowledge produced today is made available to multiple researchers who can pursue tomorrow’s technological opportunities. Finding the right organizational structures, a common language and set of priorities with respect to knowledge activities, are all critical as biology and medicine are transformed into precision engineering.
