Profiles of the Worlds Top 40 Nonwovens Producers: Part 1 - Nos 1 to 10
Textiles Intelligence, Jan 2004, Pages: 31
Nine of the world’s top ten producers of nonwoven roll goods managed to maintain sales in 2002, despite challenging economic conditions. One major exception was Japan Vilene, the world’s tenth largest nonwovens company, which suffered a fall in revenue. The decline was due partly to overcapacity in certain markets and partly to competition from low cost apparel imports from developing countries.
Freudenberg remains the number one player and attributes its success to its focus on product development and capacity expansions. Sales of roll goods by DuPont Nonwovens have remained static over the last year, although the company’s restructuring plan is considered to be a positive move.
UK-based BBA Nonwovens has enjoyed a significant increase in revenue, due in part to its focus on expanding capacity through acquisitions and joint ventures. Strong sales growth has also been witnessed by US-based Kimberly-Clark as the company continues to focus on new product introductions. Also in the USA, PGI Nonwovens has recently emerged from Chapter 11 of the US bankruptcy code and is in the process of returning to growth and profitability. Meanwhile, Netherlands-based Colbond has retained its strong position in certain markets, due mainly to its continued focus on the manufacture of high performance products for speciality markets.
